The Future of Health Care
This interdisciplinary conference addresses all of the decision-makers in the fields of business, science, politics, industry, and of course the organizations and institutions that play an active role in shaping medicine and health care systems in the future. All those interested are hereby cordially invited to take part in the exciting discussions on 7 an 8 July 2004 in the Kongresszentrum Heidelberg.

A “get-together” on the evening of 7 July in the magnificent rooms of Schwetzing Castle (Schwetzinger Schloss) offers the opportunity for the guests and speakers of the conference to exchange ideas. Mr. Gerhard Stratthaus, Minister of finance of Baden-Württemberg, and Prof. Dr. Hubert Burda, publisher, CEO of Hubert Burda Media, will give a welcoming speech.

Special thanks go to the members of the advisory board for their assistance with planning and implementation of the conference as well as to the science journalists Gaby Miketta and Ulrike Bartholomäus for their effort and creative input into creating the conference program.

“The focus is on the person”
Everybody is talking about the “crisis of the health care system”. Empty coffers and a population that is increasing in age, as well as the one-sidedness of the health care system being geared to taking care of those who are chronically ill, demand new solutions. Prevention, patients accepting their own responsibility, and living a healthy life are only a few aspects of the current discussion.

It has to do - no more and no less – with a paradigm shift in health care: How can we establish a balance between the promising possibilities of modern, high-tech medicine to “repair” the human body and what a health care system is able to finance in the long run? Which new techniques in medicine can we expect in the near future for therapies of chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other similar diseases? What are genetic technology and biotechnology capable of? What role will prevention and people’s own responsibility play in the health care system of the future? Internationally renowned speakers will discuss these issues (as well as other issues) during the two-day interdisciplinary conference “The Future of Health Care". In addition to the most important new developments in the diagnosis and therapy of the most common diseases, the conference will focus on how medicine in the future can successfully combine high-tech and low-tech, and how the emphasis can be placed more on the individual person, with their physical and mental needs – an aspect that, to the determent of the patients, all too often is neglected in the day-to-day practice of high-tech medicine.

The topics that will be dealt with during the conference affect all of us. Two exciting days await you at a location in the center of one of the most beautiful cities in Germany, a city that is also rich in tradition
